If you want to be part of a team dedicated to the creation of new books for young and middle-grade readers, then this role is for you.
Random House Children’s Books, a division of Penguin Random House, seeks a collaborative and detail-oriented Production Associate to join our Brands and Licenses book team. In this role, you’ll be managing the complete book production process, from the release of layout files to warehouse delivery and archiving of final files, in addition to supporting the team as needed. If you enjoy working on a variety of children’s book formats, including picture books, coloring and activity books, board books, and chapter books in a creative and team-oriented environment.
The Random House Children’s Book production department is filled with talented individuals who are passionate about making high-quality children’s books. This role reports to the Production Director for Brands and Licenses, whose team handles titles for several imprints within Random House Children’s Books, including Golden Books, Random House BFYR, Random House/Disney, Bright Matter Books, and The Princeton Review, and iconic brands such as Dr. Seuss, Little Golden Books, and Richard Scarry.
The ideal Production Associate is day-one ready to be part of a fast-paced and collaborative group. You’ll work closely with many colleagues in other departments within the division, especially Editorial, Managing Editorial, and Art/Design. The role is ideal for someone who is highly organized, can handle multiple tasks at one time in a deadline-driven environment, and is interested in further developing one’s skills in the craft of bookmaking from the phases of paperback and hardcover book production.
The position of production associate at Random House Children’s Books is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities, which include but are not limited to color-correcting proofs, reviewing samples, using Epson proofers, and in-office meetings. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).

The Role:
Consulting with Publishing group to develop the specifications for individual titles
Cost estimating, including multiple options for a variety of book formats
Entering and maintaining book specifications in SAP
Creating book schedules and maintaining dates in Filemaker Pro
Daily communication with both domestic and overseas suppliers
Preflighting of interior and component files in InDesign and Acrobat
Sending files to outside prepress houses/printers and trafficking and color review of all proof passes
Issuing prepress and manufacturing purchase orders and approving invoices
Archiving of final print files in-house as well as managing and sending archive files to licensors
The Essentials:
Minimum of 1 year of relevant book production experience, including cost estimating, file pre-flighting, and purchasing.
Ability to prioritize and multitask while keeping track of multiple ongoing projects in various stages of production, as well as daily duties.
Ability to work well in a deadline-oriented environment and to handle changing priorities with ease.
Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills
Proficient basic math skills to accurately complete book cost estimates
Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office
Familiarity with SAP and FileMaker Pro a plus
The salary for this position is $53,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
